Traditional Soap Making

Course details: From earliest evidence to more recent craft revival, you will explore how soap developed. Participants will then go on to make hot processed soft soap, pure olive Castile soap, and Tudor inspired herb wash-balls to take away. The day is a mixture of hands-on activities and talks. By the end of the day, participants will have a thorough working knowledge of soap making and its history.

Tutor Details: Sally Pointer has a background in archaeology and in museum learning. She is the author of ‘The Artifice of Beauty, a practical guide to perfumes and cosmetics’ and now works as a freelance heritage educator exploring traditional crafts through practical experiments. She is currently writing a new book on the history and archaeology of soap.

Fee: £75 per person and £70 for members.

Participant information: All materials will be provided.

Refreshments: The Museum tearoom, serving a range of hot and cold food options, will be open. Items can be pre-booked on arrival.
