History: Beehive skeps are traditional domed hives made by coiling and stitching straw, used across Europe from at least the Middle Ages. They provided a simple way to keep bees for honey and wax, but their use declined here in the UK after WWI, partly due to the government restocking scheme, which only gave a subsidy for bees in boxes, not skeps.
