Rag rugs have a long history as a practical and functional textile art. They emerged in the 19th century as a way for working-class communities to repurpose worn-out fabrics. Revived in the 1930s and 40s, the craft is now a hands-on sustainable lifestyle activity. Course Details: During this session, you will be guided through the process of producing your own attractive and functional seated mat from hession and recycled fabric, using traditional techniques. The session will also equip you with the knowledge and understanding to take on further rag rug projects at home. Tutor Details: Jenni Stuart-Anderson uses recycled and vintage textiles to make customised rugs and wall-works with contemporary designs. She also delivers a range of courses on the traditional rag rug techniques of hooking, progging (prodding) and plaiting (braiding). Fee: £65 per person or £60 for members. Participant information: Please bring the following with you: Sharp scissors Material offcuts (at least a carrier bag full) Pictures of anything that inspires you, along with paper and pens if you would like help to work through a particular idea. You don’t need to have a design in mind, however, just a desire to make something. Materials, including hessian, will be available to purchase at the end of the session.
