The History of the Christmas Cracker goes back to 1840 when Tom Smith, a London confectioner found that the French Bon bon – a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of tissue paper were popular at Christmas time. He included a motto inside the wrapper and an explosive pop – reminiscent of a crackling log fire. To keep up with his competitors, hats and novelty gifts were later included.
