We’re  calling on history lovers with a flair for fun and enthusiasm to bring the past to life, to join our dedicated team of volunteers.

There are a number of perks to joining the museum team, including free admission*, free tea and coffee, discounts in the tea room and onsite shop and half price room hire for weddings and events, as well as the thrill of being part of a friendly team of enthusiasts.

We currently enjoy the support of around 150 dynamic and energetic volunteers who willingly give their time to support our important work in keeping history alive.

There are a number of positions currently requiring additional support, due to their popularity:

Costumed Interpreters:

Through our collections, we represent over 700 years of Midlands life. As a living, working museum we aim to connect visitors to our collection and tell the full history of everyday life in the English Midlands.

Costumed Interpreters are responsible for engaging with the public whilst occupying one of our historic buildings and wearing period appropriate clothing. With help from museum staff, they explain the history of the building, its occupants and the Midlands to visitors.

Blacksmithing & Nail Making Demonstrator:

Blacksmithing and nail making demonstrators are based in either of our operational forges or the nail shop. They are responsible for the production of metal objects and nails that can then be sold in the museum shop. They also explain the history of the buildings and their work to visitors.

Gardeners:

Members of the gardening team are responsible for ensuring that the site’s grounds are looking their best and that the historic gardens and allotment areas are well tended. Applicants will need to be willing to work outside on a large, semi-rural site and learn gardening or landscaping techniques.

All positions involve engaging with visitors about the history of the Midlands in order to give them an enjoyable day out, carrying out typical tasks appropriate to the building, i.e. cooking or woodcutting, working as part of the wider museum team and ensuring the buildings and their contents remain safe and secure.

We’re committed to improving our volunteers’ stories whilst telling ours. As part of the team volunteers will be able to develop their skill set whilst experiencing what life was like in the Midlands and helping bring stories to life.

We’re looking for people who are passionate to engage with visitors and give them a positive memorable experience of the Museum and the history of Midlands’ life.

Volunteers are welcomed into the Avoncroft family and treated as part of the team, and as such are invited to a number of fantastic social functions throughout the year.

We’re particularly keen to hear from volunteers who are able to commit to our busy weekend and Bank Holiday events.
